Susan Hippen
Virginia Beach Treasurer

Why Susan

Isn't 39 years long enough for one person? Time for a change. Let's return service to our citizens.

As Treasurer I will:

  • Increase citizen access to valuable online services
  • Decrease inefficiencies and errors within the current system
  • Promote a positive Treasurer experience for ALL Virginia Beach citizens

About Susan

The Navy brought me to Virginia Beach and I made it my home.

  • I am the youngest of 4 siblings, was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised there and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  I was lucky enough to marry my best friend, but unfortunately became his widow after a brief fight with cancer.
  • I served 25 years active duty in the US Air Force and Navy, retiring from the Navy as a Master Chief in 2004.  I received my BS in Computer Information Systems, with a business core, from Saint Leo University.  I later received my AAS in Paralegal Studies from Tidewater Community College.
  • I was trained by IRS and the Virginia Department of taxation in personal income and small business tax preparation .
  • Virginia Beach has been my home for over 20 years.  I previously lived in the Glenwood subdivision.  My brother, nephew and his two school-aged sons live with me in the Alexandria subdivision.

Community is more than a place. It is who I am.

  • Service to others has dominated my professional and personal lives.
  • I volunteered as a catechist for fourth and fifth graders at my (catholic) parish for eight years.  I now serve as a lector at Sunday and holiday masses.
  • As a lover of sports and kids, I  volunteered to coach my great-nephew's 7 and 8 year old boys soccer team.  And I am frequently in the stands or standing at the fence cheering on my 13 year-old great-nephew at his baseball games.
  • During my naval career I was a Financial Counselor and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance representative.  I have voluntarily assisted hundreds of taxpayers with their federal and state tax preparation since 1993.  I currently assist friends and family with their tax returns. I have also volunteered with AARP’s Tax Counselor for the Elderly
  • As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for 24 years, I have served as a page during several Virginia State and National conventions and was the chaplain for my local chapter. I have served at the district, state and national levels as the Daughters of the American Revolution Service for Veterans Committee Vice-Chair.
  • I am a graduate of the inaugural class of Emerge Virginia
  • I am currently a member of the Virginia Board of Veterans Services.
  • I have been a member of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee for over 9 years and currently serve as the Vice Chair.

Help me become your next Treasurer.

My naval career, education, and community service have prepared me to serve as your Virginia Beach Treasurer.

I will return transparency, service, integrity, and accountability to the Treasurer's office.
